Took an amazing visit back to London with Dom, Yaf & Oli to go to the Typo talks. The last minute decision to get tickets on the student offer turned out to be a perfect use of a weekend, getting much needed insight into different aspects of design. Hard to summarise the visit but I managed to fill two sketchbooks with notes so it was definitely a worthwhile visit. Also many of the talks had a direct relation to the work that I am doing in the OUGD301 module.
Joshua Davies
The most interesting of the presentations were those that engaged with the audience, particularly the one with Joshua Davies where he asked people to fill in grids to create different typographic forms.
Erik Kessels
Erik Kessels entwined his great sense of humour in his presentation
fitting well with his work. This is something I aim to develop, not
necessarily a sense of humour, but a sense of the work that I created
working in unison with the presentation.
Talk by Commercial Type
Paul Barns gave a great talk about their lives as type designers. A part of the design industry that is normally quite concealed and elitist. A great talk and a good insight into their career paths as typographers. Seeing as it is one aspect of the industry I want to improve on it was good to hear that they didn't use much of the software. It is the design process that I enjoy more than the computer based work so it was a nice step in the right direction for my progression.
