Spin Studio what do they have to offer?
See their about me section in a previous post HERE...
Spin are a well defined and influential studio based in South East London started in 1992 by Tony Brooke and Patricia Finegan. They offer visually compelling design outcomes through a variety of different media's including digital, analogue and environment.
The printed outcomes are particularly strong, they are innovative and don't seem to copy existing forms of design and in such a reproduced society this is an essential quality to any decent studio or designer. Also as the studio has now been around for almost 20 years it has stature in the design world and clients are guaranteed the same high quality of work from each project, making them an obvious choice for clients working with high budgets.
This however may be what I can offer that Spin and other in demand design studios possibly can't, although I can't offer the same guarantee of outstanding quality I can work on a personal and lower budgeted level, focusing my new skills in digital / screen design work. Despite this being a plus for me, while the studio continue to get work it is not a problem for them and ideally I would love to be part of a studio that worked on these fantastic quality design briefs and clients.
Another strength that drives the studios outcomes is their versatility of formats and outcomes from motion graphics to identity they always strive to push projects into different forms. This is an area I think I could apply as one of my own strengths, having done at least some work in many different formats this diverse approach is something I hope to focus on and develop thorough the rest of the course and my career.
When looking at the studios of this scale its hard to find weaknesses as any possible weaknesses are there because of the way they have marketed / branded themselves, for example looking at it from a clients point of view they don't possibly offer a broad range of outcomes in relation to the style of the work. It is often similar in terms of the general aesthetic - High quality, custom typefaces and everything is always considered and clean, so if a client was after something a bit less organised and de-constructed they wouldn't be the best option. This could possibly be something I could offer but I don't know if it would jeopardise the rest of my portfolio and potential clients, however to be a successful designer having a diverse portfolio is essential.
Finally when thinking about the opportunities in relation to the studio, it would be amazing to get in contact and show them my work to see if they would be interested in letting me come in to the studio to get a better idea of how it works. Also when assessing what the studio has achieved in the last 20 years it shows that there is a growing demand for design of this standard, and this is something that drives my personal interest and passion for the subject. Below are a few samples of the studios work showing the diversity and quality of their work.
